Tamil Nadu's Engineering Seats Are Empty in the Wrong Places
TNEA 2026 closed Round 2 at 41.15% filled, with 1,06,778 seats open. But 167 colleges sit below 10% occupancy while the top institutions fill up — and GenAI branches recorded zero takers.

After Round 2 of TNEA 2026, Tamil Nadu has filled 41.15 per cent of its 1,81,436 academic counselling seats. That leaves 1,06,778 seats for the final round.
A year ago the same state finished counselling at around 81 per cent filled — the highest enrolment in a decade, with vacancies falling and students returning to engineering, core branches included.
The obvious reading is that engineering collapsed in twelve months. The data says something more specific and more awkward.
The numbers, in order
After Round 2 last year, the fill rate was 46.34 per cent with 79,894 seats taken. This year: 41.15 per cent.
More than 93,000 students took part in the second round, producing 49,984 allotments. Career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi expects over 1.02 lakh students in the final round and estimates roughly 45,000 seats could still be vacant when counselling ends. Last year's final figure was around 35,000.
Competition at the top has not softened at all — 25 students with cut-off marks above 190 received fresh allotments in Round 2.
The split is between colleges, not against engineering
Gandhi's Round 2 analysis covers 422 participating colleges, and the distribution is the finding:
- 7 colleges at 100 per cent filled
- 44 above 90 per cent
- 65 above 80 per cent
- 167 below 10 per cent
- 23 with zero allotments
Set against last year, the ends are pulling apart. Colleges under 10 per cent rose from 148 to 167. Zero-admission colleges went from 22 to 23. And colleges above 90 per cent fell from 56 to 44.
Students are not leaving engineering. They are refusing a specific set of colleges, and that set is growing.
The named institutions bear it out: College of Engineering Guindy filled 1,159 seats, PSG College of Technology 928, Thiagarajar College of Engineering 921. Among self-financing colleges, Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology in Coimbatore filled 2,287 and Rajalakshmi Engineering College in Chennai 1,924.
Gandhi's summary is that preference now runs to top institutions over course or branch, and to urban campuses over rural ones.
The branch data breaks the easy narrative
CSE remains the largest draw with 17,124 students by Round 2, followed by ECE above 12,000 and IT at 6,282.
But the movement runs the other way from the usual story. Core branches — EEE and Mechanical — saw higher preference than last year, while IT and CSBS slipped slightly.
Then there is this. Gandhi found courses in Data Visualisation and Data Science, Generative AI and Machine Learning, Industrial Engineering and Management, Marine Engineering, and Textile Chemistry with not a single seat filled at the point of his analysis.

What that indicates
The gap is institutional credibility, not subject demand.
A "Generative AI and Machine Learning" degree is only worth what the college behind it is worth. Students and parents appear to have worked out that a specialised label from an institution with no faculty depth, no placement record and no research base is not a shortcut into the field — it's a branch name.
Gandhi's own conclusion is that colleges have created specialised programmes faster than they could support them. Renaming a department is cheap; building one that employers respect is not, and the 2026 counselling data suggests the market has learned to tell the difference.
Tamil Nadu has spent two years courting semiconductor, GCC and data centre investment on the strength of its engineering pipeline. Read against that, 167 colleges below 10 per cent occupancy stops being an education number and becomes an industrial one.
