Omron Healthcare has started full-scale production at its first manufacturing plant in India, near Chennai. The Japanese company wants the site to become an international manufacturing hub, though for now its entire output will go to Indian buyers.

The plant

The facility covers about 24,000 square metres and runs five production lines making five models of blood pressure monitor. Omron is targeting an annual capacity of 3 million monitors by 2028.

The company is also working to raise the share of components it sources inside India by developing local suppliers. "We are continuing to identify and develop relationships with local suppliers to increase the proportion of components sourced domestically," said Ayumu Okada, President and CEO of Omron Healthcare.

Why India, and why now

Omron's own numbers make the case. It estimates it held around 40% of India's home blood pressure monitor market in 2025, yet fewer than 5% of Indian households regularly use one. So the market leader is still selling into a market that has barely started.

Over the medium to long term, Omron plans to supply international markets from Chennai too. Local production should improve supply chain efficiency and make the company's global operations more resilient. It has not announced any price cuts for Indian customers.

What it means for Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu's electronics story is usually told through phones and the iPhone contract manufacturers. Omron adds a different line: medical devices. Blood pressure monitors need precision electronics, sensors and tight quality control, which is the kind of supplier base the state has been trying to build.

The local sourcing goal is the thing to watch. A plant that assembles imported parts adds jobs. A plant that pulls local component makers into a global supply chain adds capability. If Omron's supplier programme works, it gives Tamil Nadu's smaller electronics firms a route into medical-grade manufacturing.
