TCS Opens What It Calls India's First 'Lights-Out Factory' Lab in Pune

Tata Consultancy Services opened an Industrial Autonomy and Engineering Lab at its Sahyadri Park campus in Pune on Wednesday, and called it India's first lights-out factory lab.

The term is worth unpacking before the significance lands. A lights-out factory is a plant where autonomous systems run the production line with minimal human intervention. The name is literal. If nobody needs to be on the floor, nobody needs the lights on.

What is actually in the building

According to the company's regulatory filing, the facility houses a fully robotic battery pack assembly line. Not a demonstration cell, not a single robot arm on a bench. A live, multi-stage setup.

That distinction is the point. The lab exists so manufacturers can prototype, validate and scale AI-first production systems before committing them to a real plant, which goes straight at the thing that kills most industrial AI projects: deployment risk. The gap between a pilot that works and a line that runs is where these programmes usually stall.

The facility simulates how a self-optimising factory would automate its own workflows, combining five things that normally live in separate silos: digital twins, robotics, industrial AI, factory control systems, and real-time operational intelligence. TCS names predictive maintenance, automated quality inspection and real-time process optimisation as the use cases it supports.

Why the sandbox matters more than the robots

The robotic assembly line will get the photographs. The claim about validation is more interesting.

Industrial AI has a credibility problem that has nothing to do with the models. A plant manager is being asked to let software make decisions on a line with a known output, a known defect rate and a known cost of downtime. The downside of a bad call is not a wrong answer on a screen. It is scrap, or a stopped line, or a safety event.

Against that, a vendor demo is worth very little. What changes the conversation is being able to run your own process, with your own control systems in the loop, somewhere failure costs nothing. That is what a lab like this is for, and it is why the battery pack line being fully robotic and multi-stage matters more than its throughput.

The choice of battery packs is not incidental. It is one of the few assembly processes where Indian manufacturing demand is being built from close to zero right now, so the lines are new, the tooling decisions are still open, and there is no legacy automation to argue with.

The part that is still a claim

TCS describes the lab as India's first of its kind. That is the company's own characterisation, and the announcement carries no independent verification of the "first".

It also does not much matter. The useful question is not who in India got to lights-out first. It is whether Indian manufacturers can now test autonomous production against their own processes without building the test rig themselves. On that, a live multi-stage robotic line inside a lab that customers can bring work to is a real asset regardless of who else has one.

For manufacturers

The thing to take from this is not that lights-out manufacturing has arrived. It has not, and the lab is evidence of that rather than against it. Nobody builds a validation environment for a problem that is already solved.

What has changed is that the sandbox exists. That moves the question from whether industrial AI works to whether it works on your line, with your control systems, at your defect tolerance. Much better question, and an answerable one.
