TCS Is Building a 1 GW AI Data Centre Campus in Hyderabad

TCS just made India's biggest single bet on AI compute. On Saturday its subsidiary HyperVault said it and its partners will put up to Rs 700 billion — roughly $7.41 billion — into a 1 gigawatt AI data centre campus in Telangana.

What was announced

HyperVault has secured 264 acres in Hyderabad. The campus gets built in phases, and at full buildout the company expects it to rank among India's largest AI infrastructure facilities.

TCS CEO K Krithivasan pointed to Hyderabad's scale, talent and ecosystem as the reason for the site, and framed the campus as infrastructure for global customers rather than a domestic-only play.

The gigawatt number is the story

Indian data centre announcements have mostly been measured in tens or low hundreds of megawatts. One gigawatt on a single campus is a different category of commitment. It implies power procurement, cooling, land and capital planning on a horizon of years, not quarters.

If you run enterprise AI in India, the question this raises is practical: where will your training and inference capacity physically sit a decade from now, and who owns it? An IT services company building its own hyperscale campus is a bet that compute itself becomes the thing customers pay for, not just the delivery capability wrapped around it.

This lands days after TCS agreed to buy Porsche AG's automotive and consulting unit, MHP. Put the two together and you get a company widening past traditional IT services in both directions at once — domain consulting on one side, owned AI infrastructure on the other.

Neither is a small bet. Both suggest the services model TCS grew up on is being extended, not defended.
