Jeff Dean Is Leaving Google, and Google Is Funding What He Builds Next
After 27 years, Google's chief scientist departs to launch Discovery Loop — with Google as founding investor and cloud partner. Hassabis moves to chairman, and Kavukcuoglu takes over DeepMind.
What was announced
Sundar Pichai announced a reshuffle of Google's AI leadership on Wednesday, 5 August 2026. Three moves, in descending order of how surprising they are.
Jeff Dean is leaving after 27 years. Google's chief scientist departs to launch Discovery Loop, an independent public benefit corporation set up to accelerate discoveries in machine learning, science and engineering. Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google senior fellow and Dean's collaborator across two decades of the company's foundational systems work, goes with him. Gemini co-lead Oriol Vinyals is also leaving to join them.
Demis Hassabis steps back from running DeepMind. He becomes Chair of Google DeepMind and takes a newly created title, Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He remains CEO of Isomorphic Labs. In his note to staff, he framed it as wanting the "time and space to focus on the big picture".
Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over day-to-day. Previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, he becomes Senior Vice President reporting directly to Pichai, overseeing Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. CNBC reports he will lead development of Gemini 4.
The detail worth pausing on
Google isn't just letting Dean go. It's a founding investor in Discovery Loop and its cloud partner, and the two plan to collaborate on a research framework for ML systems and infrastructure. A Google representative described the departure as friendly.
So the arrangement is: three of the company's most senior AI researchers leave, and Google funds the vehicle they leave into, sells it compute, and keeps a research relationship with it.
The backdrop
Google is not moving from weakness on the numbers. Cloud revenue rose 82% year over year in Q2 to $24.8 billion — against 37% at AWS and 43% at Azure, both larger businesses.
The pressure is on the spending side. CNBC reports Google turned cash flow negative for the first time on record last quarter, driven by capital expenditure, with full-year capex forecast at up to $205 billion. The company recently announced three new Gemini models, while Gemini 3.5 Pro remains delayed.
What I make of it
This section is my read, not reporting.
Funding the startup that takes your senior researchers looks strange until you consider the alternative. Dean, Ghemawat and Vinyals were going to leave eventually — people at that level do, and the current market would fund them instantly at terms Google couldn't influence at all. Investing buys Google a relationship with whatever comes out, and makes it the cloud provider rather than a competitor. It's cheaper than losing them to someone else's cap table.
The more interesting signal is what Discovery Loop is for. Dean and Ghemawat built the systems layer that made Google's scale possible — MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner, TensorFlow. They are not leaving to build a chatbot. A public benefit corporation aimed at accelerating discovery in science and engineering suggests they think the frontier-model race is no longer where the interesting systems problems are.
Read against Hassabis moving up to AGI strategy and Isomorphic Labs, and both of Google's most senior scientific figures have stepped away from shipping models toward applying them. That's either a considered bet that the model layer is maturing, or the ordinary result of two people with enough standing to work on what they want. Probably some of each.
