India's Bet on AI and Biotech, Together
Union Minister Jitendra Singh says India will be central to the next industrial revolution. The space sector's climb from nothing to $9 billion is his evidence — and it suggests the right test to apply.

Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, told a media conclave that India will be a central player in the next industrial revolution — one he framed as driven by biotechnology and AI together, rather than either on its own.
The claim underneath the claim is the interesting one. India entered the IT revolution late and still did well. His argument is that this time the country is arriving early.
The evidence he offered
The space sector was his worked example. India opened it to private participation in 2020. The space economy has since grown from a negligible base to about $9 billion, with a projection of $40–45 billion within eight to nine years, and a set of Indian space startups including companies that have reached unicorn valuations.
He also pointed to roughly 2,000 obsolete laws being removed, and to the nuclear sector being opened to private players for the first time. The through-line is deregulation as industrial policy: the state stops being the only permitted actor, and capital shows up.
Where AI and biotech fit
Three programmes were named — the IndiaAI Mission, the National Quantum Mission, and BioE3, the Biotechnology for Economy, Employment and Environment policy. Singh's framing put BioE3 at the front of the biotech-driven industrial shift.
Pairing AI with biotech is not decoration. The most credible near-term claims for AI in science are in protein design, molecular screening, and trial design — areas where a country with India's clinical and manufacturing base has something to contribute beyond compute.
The honest caveat
This was a ministerial address at a conclave, so treat it as statement of intent rather than as reported outcome. The space numbers are real and checkable. The AI and biotech projections are not yet.
What I'd watch instead of the rhetoric: whether the BioE3 and IndiaAI missions produce the same kind of private-participation unlock that the 2020 space reform did, or whether they stay grant programmes. The space sector worked because the rules changed, not because the target was announced. That's the test to apply here too.
