India's AI Engineering Jobs Are Growing 51% a Year
LinkedIn's CEO says AI engineering roles in India are growing 51% year on year, and US firms are shifting more overseas R&D hiring here. That moves the work from delivery to design.
LinkedIn's chief executive, Dan Shapero, put a number on something a lot of us in Indian enterprises have been sensing anecdotally: AI engineering roles in India are growing 51% year on year. Not AI-adjacent roles. Not "AI-curious" job titles. Engineering roles that exist because of AI.
What the numbers actually say
India is LinkedIn's second-largest market, and its fastest-growing, with more than 186 million members on the platform. That scale matters for a claim like this, because it means the hiring signal isn't drawn from a thin sample of metro tech firms.
Shapero's other point is the one I'd underline for anyone running a technology function here: India's share of overseas R&D hiring by US companies is rising sharply. That is a different thing from offshoring support work. R&D hiring means the design decisions move too, not just the execution.
Why the distinction matters
For two decades the Indian technology story was largely a delivery story. Someone else decided what to build; we built it well, at scale, at a price. The AI shift has been unkind to parts of that model — you can watch it in the pressure on traditional services revenue.
What Shapero is describing is a partial reversal. If US firms are placing R&D headcount here, the work being bought is judgment, not just throughput. That changes what a career ladder looks like, and it changes what a company needs to offer to keep good people.
The part nobody should skip
A 51% growth rate compounds fast, and it will run into a supply wall before it runs into a demand wall. Most Indian organisations I talk to are still trying to convert general engineers into AI engineers through short courses and internal certification. That produces people who can call an API. It does not reliably produce people who can decide whether the model should be there at all.
If your hiring plan assumes this talent will be available at last year's price, revisit it. If your retention plan assumes the same, revisit that harder — a market growing at 51% is a market where your best people have options they didn't have eighteen months ago.
The opportunity here is real. It is also, for once, an opportunity where India is being offered the interesting half of the work. That's worth being deliberate about.
