Forward Deployed Engineer Jobs in India Grew Nearly 19x in a Year

Indeed data shows FDE job postings in India grew nearly 19x between June 2025 and June 2026, as companies hire engineers who can deploy AI inside customer environments.

One job title is climbing faster than almost anything else in India's tech hiring data, and it tells you where enterprise AI work is going.

According to Indeed data reported by Analytics India Magazine, Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) job postings in India grew nearly 19x between June 2025 and June 2026. In June alone, postings were up 1,807% on the year before. The pace cooled after that, to nearly 16x the year-earlier level in July and a little over 6x in August, but that is still a steep climb for a role most people had not heard of two years ago.

What an FDE actually does

An FDE sits with the customer. The job is to understand a real business problem and make the technology work in that customer's environment, rather than building a product in isolation and handing it over.

Sashi Kumar, Managing Director of Indeed India, described the need behind the title as simple: companies want engineers who can sit with a customer, unpack the problem and make it work in practice.

That is the gap most enterprise AI programmes run into. The model is rarely the hard part. Getting it into a working process, with the customer's own data and people, is.

Where the roles are

The listings span technology companies, consulting firms, startups and specialist AI businesses. The work covers enterprise AI, workflow automation, customer service, infrastructure and healthcare. Postings show up in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and as remote roles.

Glassdoor India listings ask for Python, Java, data engineering, machine learning, generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, cloud, APIs and full-stack development. They also ask for customer communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving, which is the part that makes this a different job from a standard engineering role.

What it pays

Glassdoor reports an average annual base pay of about ₹12 lakh for FDEs in India, with a range of ₹9–16 lakh. That figure rests on only 28 submissions from its January 2026 update, so treat it as indicative. Individual submissions show total pay of ₹22–26 lakh in Hyderabad and ₹23–27 lakh in Bengaluru for people with one to three years of experience. Indeed said its own FDE sample is too small to give a reliable median.

The infrastructure side

The same data shows AI hiring spreading into infrastructure. Indeed Hiring Lab says data centre job postings have nearly doubled over two years and now make up 1.3% of all Indian job postings. Software roles account for 28% of those, with the rest spread across industrial engineering, project management and facility operations. Glassdoor puts pay for data centre engineers and technicians at roughly ₹8–12 lakh, with senior roles at ₹16–19 lakh or more in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

My read

I read the FDE number as a sign that Indian enterprises are moving past buying AI tools and into the harder job of making them work. You can run a pilot without an FDE. A production rollout across a business is where you start needing one.

The open question is supply. The role asks for strong engineering and strong client skills in the same person, and most training pipelines produce one or the other. My guess is that companies who grow these people internally will scale faster than those trying to outbid each other for the few who already exist.
